Nested in the pastoral beauty of the San Jacinto mountains of Southern California, the Idyllwild Summer Music Festival features two remarkable experiences for young orchestral musicians under the leadership of Larry Livingston. Aimed at pre-college students, the program is built around two, two-week modules. The first of these involves a large symphony and focuses on orchestral training with core participation by an outstanding applied music faculty. A large orchestra averaging more than 100 players, the symphony offers an inspiring musical adventure for every level of player. Over the past summers, the symphony has performed such demanding works as the symphonies of Mahler, Tchaikovsky, and Sibelius as well as Bernstein’s Dances from West Side Story.
The Chamberfest takes place immediately following the Symphony Orchestra session and puts joint emphasis on chamber music and chamber orchestra. It is geared more toward students planning on majoring in music in college and who demonstrate an especially high level of instrumental skill. Central to the Chamberfest program is a world-class faculty who serve both as orchestra coaches and, equally important, as chamber music teachers. Musicians selected to participate in Chamberfest will have the opportunity to develop and refine the techniques needed for excellence in small ensemble performance and to rehearse and perform virtuosic literature from the chamber orchestra repertoire. The Chamberfest Orchestra will perform its final concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles on Sunday, August 8, 2015 at 8 PM .Repertoire driven, both the Symphony Orchestra and the Chamberfest are immersion programs, designed to spark maximum educational and artistic growth.
Every summer, aspiring young musicians come from all over the world to participate in the Idyllwild Festival. Students selected for the Festival have the opportunity to work in close proximity with some of the world’s finest artist/educators, individuals who carry a deep personal commitment to the education and training of everyone they teach. For twenty-six consecutive summers, the Idyllwild Festival has flourished through passionate music-making and an irreducible reverence for the welfare of young people. Students leave profoundly enriched, their lives forever changed by the unique miracle of Idyllwild.
